Breakfast with Audrey’s by Simon Mitchell
You never knew Audrey Hepburn went through hours of makeup to cover up her myriad tattoos? Shirts were originally available in a supra limited edition release (only 25 were made) at The Breakfast Club, but it’s currently sold out so keep checking back for updates.

Controversial TED Talk of the Day: “Big ideas” conference TED came under fire today for apparently censoring a TED talk about income inequality and tax policy by Seattle-based venture capitalist Nick Hanauer, but TED founder Chris Anderson is saying that’s not exactly what happened.

Apparently, the reason that Hanauer’s talk wasn’t posted to the TED website wasn’t because — as the speaker himself posited — “[my] arguments threaten an economic orthodoxy and political structure that many powerful people have a huge stake in defending.” It’s because it just wasn’t good enough.

Anderson:

[The censorship] story [is] so misleading [that] it would be funny […] except it successfully launched an aggressive online campaign against us. […] [It’s actually] a non-story about a talk not being chosen, because we believed we had better ones, [that] somehow got turned into a scandal about censorship. Which is like saying that if I call the New York Times and they turn down my request to publish an op-ed by me, they’re censoring me.

Ouch.

Despite not making it to the TED site, Hanauer’s talk is now online (and, judging by the audience reaction, it was actually quite well received).

From The Archives: This bicycle manufacturing tutorial film from 1945 was unearthed with a nice vintage feel. The film originally was produced by the British Film Council, which makes it super legit for anglophile bike enthusiasts.

Chicago’s new protected bike lanes

I recently sent an email to CDOT stating my concerns about people walking/running in the new protected bike lanes. It took about a month, but I did get a response!

“There will certainly be enforcement in the protected bike lanes this summer (beginning in June.) Bicycling Ambassadors and Chicago Police will work to enforce all of the laws related to the protected bike lanes.

For any other questions, please contact Charlie Short at charlie.short@cityofchicago.org

It remains to be seen if this actually gets done. My guess is the Chicago Police haven’t necessarily been properly trained on how to handle these situations yet. There also needs to be a general marketing/educational campaign around this subject. The general public needs to recognize the potential danger they create when running/walking in these new lanes. They are intended for bikes only! Walkers/runners have sidewalks (notice ‘walk’ in that word). Just like bicyclists should not be on sidewalks, runners/walkers should not be in bike lanes. Seems pretty basic, but I’ve encountered this danger every time I ride the new lanes. Please, bikes only in the new protected lanes. For everyone’s safety.
